The City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program and Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter, of the GRAMMY® award-winning band The Roots, partnered to create ASpire, a mural project celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Shawn L. White. Dr. White was a community leader, father, and educator who created educational health initiatives – including HIV/ AIDS and sexually transmitted disease awareness – aimed at young African-American men in Philadelphia. Dr. White, whose work was heralded by colleagues, practitioners, friends, and the community, passed away suddenly in April 2013, from complications of heart disease. A series of workshops, programs, and community paint days accompanied the creation of the mural.
