AfroChella Boxing Project by Solomon Adufah

Pattern designed selected from the Ghana, West African Region, By Solomon Adufah

“Sports is a cornerstone of communities in Ghana. Many of the youth in Ghana are involved with boxing both for leisure and career opportunities. For many, it is about survival and representation for their community. Such communities like Bukom, located in the west of Accra, near Jamestown, is one known for nurturing skillful talent of the youth in its community. The boxing series conceptualizes nuances around innocence of the youth, courage and tenacity. The installation further investigates cultural practices combined with global influences with boxing as a sport. This unique training ring is designed and fabricated in Ghana. It is a one-of-a-kind structure freestanding and made of galvanized steel that is designed to be cantilevered against itself once the ropes are attached and tightened. The minimal connection construction allows for a fast build- up and dismantling without losing ring stiffness.” – Solomon Adufah
